Thou art intelligent! How to discover your Multiple Intelligences

I believe you are intelligent—YES you! Actually, you’re more intelligent than you may know!

Graphic designers are super intelligent — they have ‘supersonic vision’ or what is called a strong visual intelligence. They are literate in visual things. Every one of us has a degree of it within us. We all tried our hand at it as a child with coloring books and crayons, markers and sidewalk chalk. From colouring within the lines to reading street signs or finding that playground park the second time around from memory. These things all tell us about our visual intelligence and literacy.

Visual intelligence

Your visual intelligence is your natural ability to visualize, remember images and details, and an awareness of your surroundings. In other words, you’re more creative than the average bear!

Now don’t be worried if you were the kid that you did not find the park the second time around without help. All is not lost; you can still pursue your passion. Like many other things, take leadership and this quotation from Maurice Flanagan for example:

“Some are born leaders, some achieve leadership, and some have leadership thrust upon them. Which of these are you, or would you rather not bother?”

If you believe it, you can achieve it! You can learn skills necessary to become a graphic designer.

Pursue your passion

Ok, so I am getting a little technical here, but let’s do this. In addition to possessing visual intelligence, graphic designers also have visual literacy skills but after doing the quiz below, if your strongest intelligence is not visual, you may use your strongest intelligence to gain visual literacy.

Being literate means you are able to read and write. These are learnt skills. So having visual literacy simply means you have learnt the skill to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use, and create images and visual media. These skills “equip you to understand and analyze the various components involved in the production and use of visual materials”.

If your strongest intelligence is Logical-Mathematical, then you could learn how to create flowcharts like infographics pretty easily because you are a logical person.

If your strongest intelligence is Intrapersonal, then you may have a strong imagination and be awesome at creating concepts.

If your strongest intelligence is Linguistic, then you may be good at storytelling and, therefore, making storyboards and cartoons even if you have to use stick men!

If your strongest intelligence is Naturalistic, then you may be more artistic and be able to draw organic elements such as trees, landscapes, animals; all the things you like to spend time with in nature.

If your strongest intelligence is Bodily-kinesthetic, you may be an animated person more interested in creating animation.

If your strongest intelligence is Interpersonal, then you may be more able to build relationships with clients than another designer and work well under pressure.

If your strongest intelligence is Musical, then you may be versatile in multimedia and can turn your music into visual art.

And if your strongest intelligence is Visual, this is a definite go! Go start your passion! What are you waiting for? Ok, wait. Here is a tip: You may use your second or third strongest intelligence to help you zoom into a niche area you may be able to get the most reward. Now go!

So, find out today from this lesson on Multiple Intelligences how strong your visual intelligence is or how your strongest intelligence could lead to a career in graphic design.
